JAMESTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASES ANNUAL REPORT

January 15, 2021

The Jamestown Police Department has released their 2020 annual report, focusing not only on data collected by the police department, but also programs and initiatives started in the 2020 year, as well as goals for the department heading into 2021. The accomplishments of the Police Department include a focus on more community engagement, including over 400 beat patrols in 2020, collaboration between the Chautauqua County Sherriff’s Office and the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force and the assignment of a Community Services Officer. 2021 goals include the establishment of a Citizen’s Police Academy, a youth mentoring program, and the completion of the Governor’s Police Reform Initiative.

The estimated number of total index crimes in the City of Jamestown increased when compared with the previous year’s statistics. In 2020, violent crime was up 31.4 percent from the 2019 number. Property crimes dropped 1.9 percent.

The 2020 statistics show total amount of index violent crimes committed was 251 offenses, compared to 191 in 2019, and the total amount of index property crimes committed was 1,120 offenses, compared to 1,142 in 2019. Total calls to the Jamestown Police Department decreased from 34,115 in 2019 to 31,550 in 2020.

Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety Tim Jackson said of the report, “I am proud of our police officers and staff working to ensure the safety of city residents. Any increase in crime, especially violent crime, is concerning, but also in line with what the rest of the country saw during the COVID-19 crisis. The Jamestown Police Department will continue in its efforts to be more open, transparent, and honest with the community. With a number of different programs that we have begun in 2020 and starting in 2021, I am looking forward to continuing the outreach that is necessary to build up trust between the community and police force.”

Mayor Eddie Sundquist stated: “In the most difficult of years, I am extremely proud by the work and service our police officers and staff provided to the City and its residents. I am excited about the community outreach initiatives that Chief Jackson has promoted to help foster a better and more connected relationship between the public and the police force.”

Additional data and information on police department programs and initiatives are presented in the 2020 edition of the City of Jamestown Police Department annual report.
