STAR is New York’s School Tax Relief Program, offering a partial exemption from school property taxes.
Eligibility: All New Yorkers who own and live in their (1), (2), or (3) family home, condominium, cooperative apartment, manufactured home, or farm dwelling are eligible for a STAR exemption on their primary residence.
STAR Exemptions Overview:
- The Basic STAR Exemption is available for owner-occupied, primary residences regardless of age, but the household income must be less than $500,000 on the previous year’s tax return. It will exempt the first $30,000 of assessed value.
- The Enhanced STAR Exemption is available for owner-occupied, primary residences of senior citizens who are turning 65 years of age during the next calendar year, with household incomes not exceeding the statewide standard ($86,300 for 2017). This will exempt the first $66,800 of assessed value.
How to Apply for STAR Exemptions:
For Home Purchased Before March 1st, 2015:
- Basic Exemptions generally do not need to re-apply unless New York State requires it. You will receive correspondence directly from them if necessary.
- Enhanced Exemptions will receive a renewal application in the fall of each year. You must re-prove income and re-apply with this office to maintain your exemption.
For Home Purchased After March 1st, 2015:
- New property owners must apply directly with New York State by calling (518) 457-2036 or visiting STAR – New York.
- You will need social security numbers of owners along with the closing date and previous owner’s name.
