APPLY FOR AN INTERNSHIP POSITION
Overview
The City of Jamestown offers a unique and exciting opportunity to students and recent graduates to be introduced to the functions of City Government through an insider’s view of how cities operate and serve residents. Interns will perform a variety of tasks which may include policy research and development, drafting memoranda, community engagement, outreach and education, administrative tasks, and legal research and analysis.
The goal of the program is to introduce college and university students to the many aspects of municipal government through public policy and management. The intern positions are designed to provide students with a real life experience to enhance their academic and professional aspirations. Interns will work alongside City of Jamestown professionals and will have many sources from which to draw information specific to their course of study while expanding their understanding of government.
Eligibility
Prospective interns shall be undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent graduates of a two- or four-year college, university, or vocational school. Ideal candidates must communicate well, display a record of academic achievement, demonstrate a commitment to public service, and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates shall also maintain a high standard of ethics and integrity.
Intern hours vary by department. Candidates must be able and willing to work a minimum of 15 hours per week.
Compensation
The majority of the internship opportunities are unpaid unless otherwise specified. The City will gladly extend letters of recommendation and certificates of completion to interns who demonstrate professionalism and proficiency throughout their assigned projects and tasks.
Opportunities
- Office of the Mayor: The Mayor operates the executive branch of city government and oversees the day-to-day operations of all city departments. The Mayor is also the president of the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities and chairman of the Jamestown Urban Renewal Agency by virtue of office. The Mayor drafts and submits to the Council an Executive Budget on a yearly basis.
- Department of Development: Develops policy, programs, projects, and initiatives pertaining to economic development, manages code enforcement, zoning, and planning programs for the City.
- Office of the Comptroller: Ensures the financial health of the City by advising the Mayor, the City Council, and the public of the City’s financial condition. The Comptroller also makes recommendations regarding City programs and operations, fiscal policies, and financial transactions.
