Tree Selection and Planting Guide

The Parks Department will be planting trees soon and listed here are the tree varieties available. NOT ALL TREES ARE RIGHT FOR ALL LOCATIONS. Appropriate trees for each location have been determined by the size of the planting site and the presence or absence of utilities overhead and underground. Your choice is restricted by these conditions. Quantities are limited and trees are distributed on a first come basis, so make your choice quickly to avoid disappointment.

WILL YOU BE CHARGED?

If you live on a street that has less than 50% of its tree sites occupied, as determined by our urban forestry plan, you will receive a tree at NO CHARGE.

If you live on a street that has more than 50% of its tree sites occupied, you will be billed $50.

WHAT ABOUT COSTS?

We purchase trees by competitive bid to keep costs as low as possible. The price you pay
does not cover the full cost of the tree but does represent a portion of its price to the city.

If you have received a mailing, only the trees on that list are appropriate for the site conditions in front of your address. (This website includes all the trees that were purchased for this planting cycle.)

If you have not asked to have a tree planted but would like to be considered, call the number below. Your site will be evaluated and you will be mailed a list of trees suitable for your site that are still available. For help in making a selection, for additional information, to request a planting inspection, or to place an order: PHONE 483-7573

WHAT TO EXPECT

Planting is done while the trees are dormant, usually in November, March or April. The timing of your planting depends on:

  • Your choice of tree.
  • Water and gas shutoffs and other utilities must be marked so we avoid planting on them.
  • When exactly the trees are delivered from the nursery.
  • Weather.

City crews will mark the planting site with a stake and/or paint mark on the curb. The tree will be planted, watered, staked and mulched.
