The City of Jamestown Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department announces that approximately 176 of the 196 Ash Trees in the city’s urban forest are scheduled to be cut down. These trees, located in the street terraces (city rights of way), will be removed sometime between October 2018 and the spring of 2019.
Unfortunately, the Ash Trees have been infected with an invasive insect – the Emerald Ash Borer. This insect is harmless to humans, but has led to the decline and/or death of the Ash trees in the country, region, and now our city. The insect accomplishes this by feeding and tunneling on the inner bark of the tree, thus stopping the flow of water and nutrients throughout the tree.
The tree removal will take place during our regular “tree trimming” season. During the spring/summer of 2019, the stumps will be ground out. Tree replacement/planting will begin in the fall of 2019.
For more information about the Emerald Ash Borer and the damage it has caused, please see the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation site. Should you have any questions, please contact Dan Stone at the City of Jamestown Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation (716) 483-7554, or email the department through the Contact Us page.
The City of Jamestown thanks you for your patience and understanding as we deal with this situation.
