Recreation Leader (Summer Playground Program)

Job Description

  • Interviews and offers employment to Recreation Attendants.
  • Holds pre-program orientation and arranges First Aid/CPR Training for playground employees.
  • Plans master schedule of playground program activities for city-wide events/themes.
  • Maintains inventory of program equipment and submits equipment needs to Recreation Coordinator.
  • Supervises Recreation Attendants at each program site daily.
  • Responsible for disciplinary measures, if needed, against Recreation Attendants.
  • Keeps records of playground activities and requisitions equipment
  • Holds weekly staff meetings to share and discuss questions which arise and suggests improvements in policy.
  • Responsible for promotion of city-wide playground program activities.
  • Responsible for scheduling Recreation Attendants.
  • Meets daily with the Recreation Coordinator to give update on program and any issues.
  • Responsible for submitting report at program’s end to the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Required to keep Playground Office & Storage Closet in order
  • All other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma, or GED, and One (1) year minimum of College Education

Experience

  • Previous work experience with children, previous employment in a job involving recreation activities
  • One year of responsible experience in athletic, or recreation activities or any equivalent combination of experience.
  • Good knowledge of the methods, equipment, and techniques of modern playground and recreation activities; skill in administering first aid; ability to facilitate cooperation of others, especially children; ability to promote, plan, organize, and supervise recreational activities; neat appearance; initiative, reliability; physical condition commensurate to the demands of the job.

To Be Acquired On the Job

  • First Aid/CPR training prior to program start

Recreation Attendant

Job Description

Work Hours:

  • 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the use of all playground apparatus and equipment to insure maximum safety
  • Oversees participant registration, records daily attendance by participants
  • Plans daily and weekly schedules of playground activities
  • Supervises free lunch program and records date required
  • Teaches and officiates at athletic events such as baseball, kickball, football, basketball, as well as assisting organizing teams for program-wide contests
  • Teaches and supervises playground and recreation activities such as mancala, tag games, box hockey, and other variety of games
  • Plans skits and promotes participation in the annual Talent Show
  • Promotes a wide variety of recreation activities such as nature study, art & craft projects, story-telling, dramatic clubs, dancing
  • Promotes Summer Reading program
  • Enforces playground safety rules and administers first aid
  • Keeps records of playground and recreation activities and requisitions equipment
  • Attends staff meetings to share and discuss questions which arise and suggests improvements in policy
  • All other duties as required.

  • New York State Driver’s License

Experience

SUMMER LABORERS (FULL-TIME)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is routine manual unskilled work involving both heavy and light physical labor in a wide variety of work activities.  Work is assigned in detail and is subject to direct supervision and inspection by an immediate supervisor.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

  • Loads and unloads material and equipment from trucks;
  • Spreads sand, gravel and asphalt;
  • Assists skilled workers by carrying equipment and tools;
  • Carries sand, gravel and cement;
  • Digs ditches, mows lawns, trims shrubs, and rakes grass and trash;
  • Cleans, paints and washes;
  • Assists in the repair and landscaping of areas as assigned;
  • Assists is tree trimming and brush removal;
  • Cleans culverts, drains and ditches;
  • Assists in servicing and cleaning of equipment;
  • Assists in laying water, sewer or district heat lines;

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to follow instructions; willingness to perform routine manual work; ability to lift heavy weights; willingness to work under all weather conditions; physical endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  The positions are open to college students who are 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license. No experience or training is required. Those hired must pass a drug test as a requirement of employment. There is no written exam required for employment.
